Prologue
An honest AI study room#
The first thing to understand about YELE is what it refuses to do. Ask it for the answer and it will not give it. It restates your question back to you, checks what you already know, stretches it, and asks you to apply it — the Socratic loop — because the point is the learning, not the output. A tool that does the homework teaches a student to need the tool. YELE is built to make itself unnecessary.
It comes in two shapes. A student can subscribe and use it on their own — indie mode, which runs as its own product — or a school can provision it for its students and run it as part of the platform — school mode — where it ties into grades, exam recalibration, and a parent view. The marketing story lives at /product/yele; this handbook is the working manual for school mode.
The five capabilities

The Study Room
Reading is chunked into segments; the AI stays silent until the student speaks. The student presses Recall, the text hides, they predict their own score, and they write a summary from memory — which is then graded against a per-curriculum rubric voiced as a real examiner (BAC philosophie, GCE A-Level physics, WASSCE biology, IB HL physics), not a generic bot.

The Working Surfaces
For the subjects that need more than prose: code, step-by-step mathematics, and structured essays, each marked against a curriculum-specific scheme by a dedicated grader — the BAC philosophie's problématique → thèse → antithèse → synthèse, a maths solution checked line by line, a program judged on what it actually does.

The Memory Engine
Spaced repetition on the SM-2 algorithm with expanding intervals. Every highlight, wrong quiz answer, and weak summary becomes a review card; a daily, interleaved review — capped so a session stays short — keeps it all from fading.

The Exam Simulator
Real past papers from real boards, timed on a server-true clock — closing the tab does not pause it. Each attempt is AI-graded against the marking scheme with a diff showing exactly what was missed, and re-attempts are tracked separately.

Three views of the same data: the student sees everything; the parent sees an outcome digest — mastery delta, retention, the summary-improvement curve — but never real-time activity or chat transcripts; the teacher sees class compliance on assigned units. The student controls, per subject, what the parent can see.
Chapter one
Read, recall, be graded#
The study room at /yele/study takes over the screen when a document opens. The text is broken into chunks; the tutor does not narrate or summarise. When the student is ready, they press Recall: the passage hides, they commit to a self-predicted score, and they write what they remember. YELE grades that summary against a rubric tuned to the curriculum and returns strengths, the points missed, a score, and how far their prediction was from the truth — the way an examiner would, not a cheerleader.
When the student does ask a question, the tutor answers through a structured hint ladder — it restates the question, probes what the student already knows, offers a graded hint, walks a single step while asking the student to explain it, confirms, and only then moves on — advancing only as the student demonstrates understanding. Peeking back at the hidden passage during recall is tracked and deducted from the score, so leaning on the text has a real, recorded cost. The whole exchange runs in the student's language — English, French, or Arabic — and a voice mode lets them speak and listen rather than type.
Chapter two
Practice that compounds#
Learning fades unless it is revisited, so YELE turns every weak spot into future practice. The daily review at /yele/review serves the memory engine's due cards — interleaved across subjects, capped so a session stays short — and grades each recall on the SM-2 scale to schedule the next sighting.
The exam simulator runs on real past papers at /yele/past-papers — filterable by board (BAC, GCE O- and A-Level, WASSCE, KCSE, IGCSE, IB HL, SAT), subject, and year. A paper can be taken as a timed simulation on the server-true clock with no tutor in the room, or as an untimed study session with the Socratic tutor. Either way it is graded against the marking scheme, with a diff that shows precisely where marks were lost.
For lighter practice drawn from the student's own gaps, there are one-on-one retrieval duels against a schoolmate at /yele/duels and themed weekend challenges at /yele/challenges — competition that still pulls from what the student needs to revise.
Chapter three
Study together#
Studying alone is hard to sustain, so YELE has a quiet group surface. A study room at /yele/rooms is a shared focus session — Pomodoro timers, presence only, no chat. You see who else is in the room and when they joined; the structure does the motivating. Rooms can be open to anyone or scoped to a class, and a heartbeat keeps the member list honest.
Stronger students can offer to coach at /yele/mentor — peer mentoring unlocked once a student has a track record of solid graded recalls, and optionally gated behind a teacher's approval. And the /yele/leaderboard ranks effort at two scopes — across the whole platform and within the school — with a visibility toggle for students who would rather not appear ( their rank still accrues quietly while they stay hidden ).
Chapter four
The honesty mirror#
The hardest design problem in a study tool is the parent. Too little visibility and they cannot help; too much and it becomes surveillance that kills the student's trust in the room. YELE's answer is the honesty mirror: three deliberately different views of the same data.
The student sees everything, on their own digest. The parent, at /portal/yele/digest, sees an outcome digest — study sessions, per-subject mastery and its delta, retention — but never live activity and never a chat transcript, and they can send a one-line encouragement. The teacher sees class compliance on the units they assigned. Crucially, the student decides, subject by subject, how much of their outcomes the parent sees at all — the toggle lives on the student's own digest at /yele/digest.
Chapter five
The school runs it#
In school mode, YELE is administered from /dashboard/yele, whose overview shows usage, compliance, the licence, and quick links. The school tunes the experience at /dashboard/yele/settings — enabling YELE, parent access, gamification, the leaderboard scope (class, grade, or school), and the per-student price and currency. (The underlying AI engine is configured and managed centrally by the YESS platform team, with automatic fallback so the room stays up; the school sees it, read-only, but does not have to run it.)
Access is granted per student, per class, or all at once at /dashboard/yele/student-access. The school sets mandatory study targets — daily minutes, weekly sessions, monthly quizzes, a minimum score per grade level — at /dashboard/yele/targets, and tracks who is meeting them in the compliance table at /dashboard/yele/compliance, which flags students who fall behind. After an exam, /dashboard/yele/recalibration reads the real grade records and adjusts each student's YELE goals, assigning focused recovery sessions to those who scored low. Every administrative action lands in the immutable /dashboard/yele/audit-log (the log accepts inserts and reads, but nothing can edit or delete a line).
Teachers get their own surface at /dashboard/yele/teacher — a mastery heatmap, class compliance, and surfaced signals for their homeroom, filterable by week or month.
Chapter six
The school monetises it#
YELE is something a school can offer its families and earn from. The school-facing economics live at /dashboard/yele/billing — the licence cost, a revenue summary (net profit is revenue minus licence cost), the per-student price and billing mode, and the running revenue ledger. There are three commercial tiers; which one a school is on is agreed with YESS and set centrally on the platform side, recorded in an append-only history.
Tier A — school-funded. The school pays a flat per-student cost to YELE and gives YELE to families at no extra charge. The school carries the cost and there is no student-facing margin — the benefit is purely the learning outcome.
Tier B — school-resold. The school pays the same per-student cost but sets its own resale price to families and keeps the margin between the two. It rewards a school confident in uptake that wants the tool to pay for itself and then some.
Tier C — revenue-share. The school pays nothing upfront. YELE recovers its per-student cost out of what families pay, and the remaining margin is then split between YELE and the school. It trades some margin for zero risk, which suits a school still proving demand.
