What does a teacher's classroom actually produce? The honest, useful part of that question that YESS answers today is coverage: is the syllabus being taught on time, is the logbook being kept, are alerts piling up? That is a real per-teacher report, read live from the same tables the teacher fills every week — not a survey, not a guess. Around it sit two more lenses: a classroom analytics view for the hardest questions and weakest topics, and a student at-risk view. This handbook is precise about which dimension is built, which is a lens under construction, and which is still roadmap — because insight you can't trust is worse than none.

Prologue

Insight, not surveillance#

"Teacher insights" is an easy phrase to abuse. YESS draws a hard line: this module is about coverage and compliance — whether the curriculum is being delivered on schedule and the records are being kept — to help a head of department support a teacher who is falling behind. It is not a productivity score, not a ranking, and not a way to read a teacher's grades against their colleagues.

It is also worth being straight about which dimension is actually built. The marketing line reads "impact, coverage, engagement." Today, coverage is the real, working, per-teacher dimension — the report at /dashboard/lms-reports reads it live from the tables teachers fill in. Impact (results attributable to a teacher) and engagement (attendance and participation rolled up per teacher) are not yet aggregated at the teacher level — they are on the roadmap at the end of this book, and we say so rather than pretend a chart exists.

There are three insight surfaces in the app: the per-teacher coverage report, a classroom analytics lens at /dashboard/teacher-insights, and a student at-risk view at /dashboard/lms-analytics. The chapters below take each in turn, and are clear about how finished each one is.

The question is not "is this a good teacher?" — it is "is this class on schedule, and who needs help staying there?"

Chapter one

The per-teacher coverage report#

The built heart of this module is the report at /dashboard/lms-reports. It is a leadership screen — gated on the permission that lets a principal, a vice- principal, a head of department, or an owner see every syllabus plan, not something an individual teacher opens on a colleague. Pick an academic year and a term, and it renders a table with one row per teacher.

What each row shows

    Subjects taught

    The distinct subject-and-section combinations this teacher is responsible for this term — the size of their teaching load, computed from the schedule, not typed in.

    Topics planned & completed

    How many syllabus topics the teacher planned for the term, and how many are marked completed — read straight from their own syllabus plans, so the number is the teacher's own record.

    Topics overdue

    Planned topics whose planned date has passed and that are still not completed or skipped. This is the single most useful number on the screen — it is 'behind schedule', made concrete.

    Completion rate

    The share of planned topics completed, rendered as a badge so a leader can scan the column and see who is green and who is not without reading every cell.

    Logbook entries

    How many logbook entries the teacher has written — the compliance side of coverage. A teacher who is teaching but not logging shows a high completion rate and a low entry count, which is its own signal.

    Active alerts

    The count of open alerts against this teacher — behind-schedule, missing-logbook, and at-risk flags — so a leader can jump from the number to the reason.

Beneath the teacher table sits a second view: subject progress by section — completion percentage and overdue topics per subject and section — plus a history of delivered reports. The whole page exports to CSV or PDF for a governors' pack, and its KPI strip totals the teacher count, the average syllabus completion, the subject-section count, and the open alerts.

Chapter two

Turning a lag into an alert#

A completion rate is a number; an alert is a nudge. YESS generates alerts from the same coverage data in three flavours: behind-schedule (a teacher's overdue topics have crossed a threshold), missing-logbook (lessons taught without a logbook entry), and at-risk (a student whose signals say they need intervention). The active-alert count on each teacher row is the front of this; the alerts themselves link back to the teacher and subject they concern.

A leader can trigger alert generation on demand from the report. The scheduled version — regenerating alerts on a daily cron — is opt-in and off by default, so on a stock install a leader runs it from the button rather than waking up to a fresh batch. Turning that cadence on by default is a planned change.

Chapter three

The classroom analytics lens#

The screen that literally carries the name "teacher insights," /dashboard/teacher-insights, is a different instrument: a classroom analytics lens meant to help a teacher plan re-teaching. It has two tabs — the hardest quiz questions (ordered by accuracy, worst first) and the weakest course topics (ordered by how many students are struggling) — drawn from real analytics views over quiz attempts and topic progress.

Be aware of its maturity: the underlying views are real, but the finer per-question and per-topic breakdowns on this screen are being reconnected to the current analytics schema, so some columns are still settling. Treat this lens as a developing companion to the coverage report rather than a finished dashboard — the roadmap below tracks the reconnection. For a firm number today, the coverage report in chapter one is the surface to trust.

Chapter four

The student at-risk neighbour#

One surface over is the student-facing side of the same intelligence: /dashboard/lms-analytics, which reads student performance and surfaces at-risk students and the interventions logged against them. It answers a different question than the coverage report — "which students are slipping?" rather than "which classes are behind schedule?" — but the two are read together: a behind-schedule class and a cluster of at-risk students in it are the same story from two ends.

What makes teacher insights elite#

Four things done right

    Read from the teacher's own record

    Coverage is computed from the syllabus plans and logbook entries teachers keep anyway — not a separate form to fill in and not a manager's estimate. The insight and the work are the same data, so there is no gaming it and no double entry.

    Live, not a stale snapshot

    The report aggregates on demand over real tables. There is no overnight rollup to drift out of date; the completion rate a head of department reads at 4pm is the rate as of 4pm.

    Compliance and coverage in one row

    Topics-completed and logbook-entries sit side by side, so the teacher who is teaching but not recording — or recording but behind — is visible in a single glance instead of two reports.

    Honest about its own edges

    YESS ships the coverage dimension as a firm, trustworthy report and is explicit that impact and engagement rollups aren't built yet. An analytics module that oversells is one nobody trusts twice; this one tells you exactly how far to lean on it.

    Per-teacher impact (results)

    There is no teacher-level rollup of the grades their classes achieve — the gradebook holds the scores, but nothing yet attributes results back to a teacher as an 'impact' metric. Building that carefully (and fairly, cohort-adjusted) is planned work, not a hidden feature.

    Per-teacher engagement

    Attendance and participation are captured per student and per class, but not aggregated into a per-teacher engagement figure. A teacher-level engagement lens is roadmap.

    Finishing the classroom lens

    The hardest-questions and weakest-topics views are real, but the teacher-insights screen's finer columns are mid-reconnection to the current analytics schema. Completing that wiring — and adding session timing and per-topic mastery — is the next step for that surface.

    Alerts on a schedule by default

    Alert generation runs on demand today and on an opt-in cron. Making a sensible daily regeneration part of setup, so leaders arrive to a fresh picture, is planned.

Do it step by step#

Read a term's coverage the way a head of department does — find who's behind, and act. Four steps on the report that actually works.

    Open the coverage report

    A school leader opens /dashboard/lms-reports and picks the academic year and term. The per-teacher table renders live from syllabus plans and logbook entries.

    This is a leadership screen — it needs the permission that grants sight of every syllabus plan, so a teacher can't open it on a colleague.

    Scan the overdue column

    Read down the overdue-topics and completion-rate columns. The names with a climbing overdue count and a red completion badge are the classes falling behind — that's your shortlist, not the whole staff.

    A high completion rate with almost no logbook entries is its own flag — teaching that isn't being recorded.

    Generate the alerts

    Click generate alerts to turn the lags into behind-schedule and missing-logbook flags, then read the active-alert count on each teacher row and follow it to the reason.

    Cross-read the at-risk students

    For a class that's behind, open /dashboard/lms-analytics to see whether its students are also slipping — a behind class full of at-risk students is one problem, not two. Export the report to PDF for the department meeting.
